Ingredients
¾ cup shortening (1 stick margarine + ½ stick butter works well)
1 cup sugar
¼ cup heaping molasses
1 large egg
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
¾ teaspoon ground cloves
½ teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon salt
Instructions
Cream together the shortening and sugar in a large bowl.
Add the molasses and mix well.
Beat in the egg until smooth.
In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, salt, and spices.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and stir until combined.
Form dough into 1-inch balls and roll each ball in sugar.
Flatten slightly with the bottom of a juice glass dipped in sugar and place 2 inches apart on a greased cookie sheet.
Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 8–10 minutes, until set but still soft.
Remove immediately to cool on paper towels or wire racks.
